Area residents are being warned that conditions are favorable for some serous grass fires.
Henryetta firemen responded to a grass fire Monday afternoon just south of town that blackened about two acres of pasture. The blaze was believed to have started from burning leaves.
"Conditions are ideal for a fire to spread quickly," said fire chief David Bullard. He pointed out Monday afternoon the combination of low humidity and exceedingly dry grass helped push that fire along. "We were fortunate and didn't have a lot of wind or else the fire would have been difficult to control."Grass fires have erupted all around the area because of the low dew point and humidity.
Area firemen were battling a blaze near Tiger Mountain. Another fire in the Hanna area has threatened some homes and outbuildings. That fire has quickly spread to several hundred acres.
Over the weekend, a fire in Osage County was responsible for burning around 4,000 acres. Another 1,000 acres were blackened after a fire in Logan County that even closed down Interstate 35.
Bullard said anyone who wants to burn the accumulation of winter debris, should make sure the area they re burning in has access to a constant supply of water.
