The American Legion Department of Oklahoma held the 98th Mid-Winter Convention Jan. 8 and 9 in Midwest City at the Midwest City Sheraton—Reed Conference Center.
The following members of Post 0122 were in attendance at the Convention:  Post Commander Jack Nuckols, Post Adjutant David Taylor and Post Chaplain Ted Campbell.
legion logoThe main theme of the Convention was membership. Delegates were told the Department of Oklahoma is losing approximately 1,000 members a year. The death rate among Vietnam era Veterans and World War II Veterans are occurring at almost the same rate which is quite alarming.
That problem with membership was brought home with the news that ten American Legion posts were closed during the past year.
Department Commander Bobby Bryant said those posts have one year to reactivate if enough membership and interest is obtained.
"Hopefully with the Post revitalization program the Department of Oklahoma has instituted we will be able to turn things around and renew our membership numbers and increase our productivity in The American Legion Programs for Veterans and their families and increase our involvement in the Communities where we are located," he added.
The Post Adjutant David Taylor and Post Chaplain Ted Campbell were sworn in as the new District 4B Commander and Vice-Commander respectfully.   District 4B is composed of 8 Post, and the first order of business was to set the date for the District 4B Conference.  It was decided to hold the Conference at The American Legion Post-0204 in Seminole, Oklahoma on May 28th, 2016. The agenda and times will be announced at a later time.

The newly acquired building in Wewoka that is housing the Harrison Bell Post 0122 and The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1311 is still undergoing renovation.  Anyone interested in helping to get the new facility ready for use by volunteering their time and/or building materials is asked to call the Post Commander Jack Nuckols 405-683-0391, or the Post Adjutant David Taylor at 405-257-6122.
For Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled rated at 100% there is a requirement to comply with in order to receive Oklahoma State Veterans Benefits.  A special document with a raised seal on it must be procured to present to the various State agencies to receive your benefits.  This document can be gotten at the Veterans Administration Regional Office located at 125 N. Main Street in Muskogee, Oklahoma.  If you apply for this document through the Veterans Administration, it will take four to six weeks to receive it.   As a precaution I would have my military I.D. and either your V.A. file number or Social Security card in your procession to present to the Officials to preclude any problems in procuring this needed document.  People licensed to carry a firearm and have it in your procession when you make a trip to Muskogee’s Veterans Regional Office, you are not allowed to park on Federal Property.
The Post will be announcing the details of its raffle for the Browning semi-automatic 30.06 with scope and ammunition in the near future.  It is hopeful that the Post will be well supported in their endeavor to raise funds for American Legion programs such as Boys State. Last year Harrison Bell Post 0122 sent three young men to the state level competition. The young men were chosen from an essay contest the Post conducted at the local Wewoka High School.
