April 23 will be the day the fight against cancer takes center stage.
The annual Henryetta Relay for Life will start at 2 p.m. and continue through midnight at the football field.relay rotary
Michelle Brown, American Cancer Society volunteer, told Henryetta Rotarians the decision to start later on Saturday is designed to give teams more of an opportunity to get their displays set up.
One change this year because of the restructuring is the annual cancer survivors' lap will be held at 6 after teams have already started walking around the football fields. "We felt it would be too much to ask the survivors to stay around all day. Instead, we are looking at setting a bell on the track and each team will strike it for the number of survivors who have registered."
She said the annual survivors' dinner will be held April 21 at the Methodist church. Brown said all cancer survivors are encouraged to pre-register before the dinner so they can receive the official Relay t-shirt at that time.
The luminaria ceremony will be held at 10:30 Saturday evening. At that time, lighted bags honoring victims and survivors will be placed around the field.
Brown said individuals can go to the Henryetta library to purchase a bag and decorate it. "The bags are $5 and, if you put a photograph on it, that really makes a difference," she added.
Coming back this year will be the car show and race. Teams are encouraged to build a car of any design out of cardboard. They will be displayed at a special car show with donations taken for the winning cars.
Music will be provided throughout the day.
"This is a special day for the teams and the survivors and we encourage everyone to come participate," she added.
