The regular November business meeting was held Nov. 15 at Pepino’s Restaurant in Okemah. The highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Ron Gott, the commander of the American Legion Post in Okemah. He told how the American Legion was founded after World War I in 1919 and the many things the organization does for our country and our veterans. This includes a family support network, Veterans Administration outreach to help families of vets, support of the VA hospitals, Boy Scouts, developing a flag code with a ceremony to retire flags, sponsoring of Boys and Girls States, and many other endeavors to help veterans and their families. The four pillars of the American Legion are Veterans, Children, Patriotism, and Homeland Security. The headquarters of the American Legion is in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is highlighted with a statue of a lady looking South and a Civil War Museum.
Members attending the meeting were Ann Jackson, Rebecca Hold, Regent Velda Jo Bradley, Geneva Bertges, Susan Barnett, Dorothy Burden, Judith Drennan, Judy Williams, LuCretia Harkey, Sheldon Starr, Gene Meredith, Theo Crawley, prospective members Amber Ott, April Jorgensen, and Ruth Newport, and guests Ron Gott, and Pam Ferrell.
