Area veterans in need of food are going to be the target of an effort by the Henryetta Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Called, “Feed the Vet,” the program will distribute food every 90 days to needy veterans starting March 30.
VFW Post 539 commander Bill Goodner said he is looking for 90 families to be helped in the program’s initial stages. “Anyone who honorably served in the military is eligible. That includes surviving spouses and their families,” he said.
The food baskets will consist of vegetables canned food bread or crackers, fruit and juice or soda. Those food baskets are going to be provided by the Disabled American Veterans organization.
Those will be given out through the Henryetta First Methodist Church.
Goodner said anyone who knows of families in need should contact him, mayor Jennifer Clason, Donnie McKay, Judy McElhanon, Bruce Jones, Ron Casey or the Free lance.
“About March 1 we will have coupons to give to the recipients,” Goodner said. “Those coupons must be presented on the date food is distributed.”
Initially, veterans within a ten-mile radius of Henryetta will be sought out but Goodner said that can be expanded to reach veterans anywhere in the general Henryetta area.
