City crews will be cleaning out some ditches along Lake Road Drive in an effort to prevent future flooding.
council tnApproval for the work was given Tuesday night as part of a 20-minute March council meeting.
The work will take place from Corporation to the Interstate 40 bridge to eliminate a problem when heavy rains force the ditches to overflow and cover the roadway.
“We have had to evacuate Lake Drive Manor in the past,” said mayor Jennifer Clason. “It is a danger. I think it is a priority.”
“We need to dome other areas,” councilor Bill Goodner said. He pointed out flooding issues from 12th to 14th streets on Division also suffers from high water following heavy rains.
Clason said recent cleanup work on a number of creeks throughout the town as well as repairs on a storm drain on East Main has decreased much of the flooding issues.
Council members gave approval for the Okmulgee County Relay for Life to use the civic center for the annual Survivor’s Dinner in April at no charge.
That dinner honors men and women who have won their battles against cancer. They are also recognized at the Relay for Life event by leading the walkers around the football field. This year the Relay for Life will be held April 21.
Members of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance were honored for their work at Nichols Park earlier this month. “There were over 100 kids there all day,” Clason said. She pointed out the final touches on the park work were accomplished including a new roof at the shelter house as well as repairs to electrical lines damaged by vandals.
Approval was given for a franchise for Suddenlink to operate a cable service in the town. That approval had been held up from the February meeting pending some questions by city attorney John Insabella to Suddenlink officials. “Those have been answered,” Clason said.
Denied was a request by T-Moble to reduce the monthly rental on some towers around town. No explanation was given for the 20 to 25 percent reduction request and no T-Moble representatives were on hand.
