There have been many changes in the past 100 years and Florene Minyard Thomas has been around to see them.IMG 2694
The Henryetta centenarian was the honoree Saturday at a birthday party held at the Dewar Indian Community Center with over 100 family members and friends attending.
Florene was born in Foss, Okla., then moved to Henryetta where she and her husband David, owned and operated Thomas Grocery on May Street for 22 years. That store was frequented by the many young people who lived in the south part of Henryetta and would stop in after classes ended at Roosevelt grade school.
She and David raised four children, Doyal, Ron, Gaye Thomas Newton and DeRhonda Thomas Andrews in the home attached to the store.
After the store was sold in 1989, she kept busy with work at the First Assembly of God church where she was both a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school secretary. She also was involved with the Henryetta Territorial Museum and organized a quilting club.
On hand at the birthday celebration were her nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
