Purser Edward “Eddie” Newman, Jr., 76, of Henryetta, died Oct. 6, 2018. He was born May 26, 1942, in McComb, Miss., to the late Purser Edward “Bilbo” Newman, Sr., and Joy (Roberts) Patman. Eddie graduated in 1960 from the Oklahoma Military Academy, where he was a member of DeMolay and the Drill Team. He attended Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University, and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Before relocating with his family to his wife’s hometown of Henryetta in 1976, Eddie was active in the Tulsa heavy equipment, construction and real estate industries. Prior to his retirement in 2014, he was involved with multiple Henryetta businesses, including Burnett Hardware, Burnett Heating & Air, and Easy Pawn, and participated in a number of community organizations, including Rotary, the Elks Lodge, Boy Scouts and the Green Country Soccer Association.
Eddie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan (Burnett) Newman; children: Purser Edward “Eddie” Newman, III, and wife Stephanie of Edmond, and Scott Newman and wife Anne of Jenks; grandchildren, Bailey Newman, Timothy Newman, Abby Newman and William Newman.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Henryetta at 10 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or any charity of choice in Eddie’s name.
