Dewar Dragon fans turned out to show their support for their team Friday morning as they began the long trek to Alva for a state championship match with Laverne Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Dragons started off the day with a breakfast at the Dewar First Baptist church then boarded a spacious, comfortable bus donated by the Muscogee Creek Nation.
This is the third quest for the gold ball for the undefeated 13-0 Dewar team. They played Fox in 1985 as a Class A team then returned in Class B in 2007 to face Morrison. The 1985 match saw the Dragons shut out 34-0 then lost 58-20 to Morrison in 2007.
This year they are playing the Laverne Tigers, a three-time state champion team. Dewar won 54-18 last week against Shattuck, a team that has had three state champion titles under their belt.
The trip to Alva is something Dragon coach Josh Been has been looking forward to. He was a member of that runner-up 2007 team and has been wanting to add gold to the Dragon trophy case. Been has his own coaching record with 94 wins and only 26 losses.
