An Okmulgee County veteran has a new tractor this week.
Joy Hughes was one of five recipients of a new tractor in a nationwide program through Kubota.
Hughes is a former Army service member and veteran of Desert Storm. She lives with her husband J.D. and children on a farm north of Beggs.
The presentation Tuesday was made by Stewart-Martin Kubota dealer Joey Martin as part of the “Geared to Give” program by the farm implement corporation.
That program partners with the Farmer Veteran Coalition recognizing current and past U.S. military service members for their continued service to their communities through farming.
The program has been underway since 2015 and matches veterans’ needs with donated resources to help them further their agriculture careers.
Hughes said she heard about the program and applied earlier this year. The process included a written essay describing their business plan, personal investment in their business, vision and goals, and a clear need for assistance.
Five veterans are selected across the nation following a review of the applications earlier this year.
“Kubota is proud to work with FVC to recognize our nation’s veterans to power and empower them with the right equipment to help them achieve their dreams,” said Martin as he presented the keys to the new tractor to Hughes.
