George Roland Gibbons, a former Henryetta resident, living in Enid, died March 31, 2023 in Enid at the age of 79. He was born Sept. 26, 1943 in Brewer Main to Harman Leston and Glenys Ethel Cunningham Gibbons.
He was raised and educated in Brewer graduating from Brewer High School in 1963. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving as an Air Policeman and later as a Missile Silo Guard at Dow Air Force Base. He then served in Vietnam. He was Honorably discharged after over 11 years of service to his country. He returned to his hometown and worked for Great Northern Paper Co. for several years. He then worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Penobscot County, Main Sheriff’s Department for over four years later working as a Route Manager for Coca-Cola for more than ten years and then owned and operated a Bauchman Potato Chip Co. franchise for five years and managed properties by the lake in the summer and in town in the winter.
He was introduced to a young woman, Gloria Wright, from Texas while visiting his brother and sister-in-law. The couple was married Dec. 31, 1993. The couple made their home in Henryetta. He worked for the Coburn Optical in Muskogee until his retirement in 2008. He was an active member of Emmanuel Enid. He was always involved with youth both in and out of church.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Gibbons, of the home; daughter Ruth Ellen Benton and son-in-law Keith; son, Jeremy James and daughter-in-law Rachel; three granddaughters; Ellen, Dori, and Caria; two sisters, Janice Wood, and her husband Arthur and Joan Thompson; one Brother, Harmon Gibbons and his wife Myrna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Fred Gibbons.
Memorials may be made in his honor to the Gideons International with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday April 5, 2023, in the Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Chapel in Enid with Pastor Jim Paslay officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery with Military honors presented. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
