When students come back to Henryetta Oct. 12, all will be required to wear masks regardless of age and grade levels.
That was the decision Friday morning at a special school board meeting.
Concern over younger students wearing a mask throughout the day was aired by board members and teachers. Ashley Corn pointed out there are times throughout the day that masks can be taken off for both students and teachers.
“All of the schools around us are requiring masks,” she said.
Board member Pam Bealko said she doesn’t see a problem with students wearing a mask at school. “They have to wear shoes, pants, shirt. It’s a piece of clothing now. If a mask comes between you child’s education, you need to revisit it,” she said.
Elementary teacher Laura Goodner pointed out that the classroom sizes make it difficult if not impossible to have the students social distanced. “Even if you get rid of all the desks and have the students sitting on the floor, there is not enough room.
School construction was also brought up by superintendent Dwayne Noble who pointed out that several of the elementary classrooms have no windows. “This is one of my concerns.”
Goodner pointed out that some teachers have underlying health conditions that can be exacerbated by exposure to the coronavirus.
