Florene May Chancey was born in Bryant Nov. 27, 1928 to Homer and Vera (Ross) Chancey. She died March 22, 2021 in Tulsa, Ok at the age of 92. Florene was an active member of the Bryant Community Church. She was a graduate of Henryetta High School and her alma mater Oklahoma State University Cowboys in 1950. Florene is preceded in death by her parents Homer and Vera Chancey, Brother Winford Chancey and twin sister Lorene (Chancey) Roy.
Florene was a Registered Dietitian working at St. John’s Hospital for many years until she retired. She held degrees in Master of Science in Home Economics as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Home Economics.
Her background varied since she graduated from OSU in 1950 adding strength to the food, nutrition and institution administration department in the College of Home Economics. After completing a dietetic internship at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN, she was a clinical and administrative dietitian in Texas.
Later in Kansas City, she spent most of her hospital working years in the Trinity Lutheran Hospital and in the Bethany Hospital. From there, she went to the University of Missouri-Columbia and received a master’s degree. On her return to Oklahoma, she developed the dietetic technician program at Oscar Rose Junior College. After that program was put into effect, Miss Chancey moved to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. There she completed the development and implementation of the coordinated under graduate program in dietetics. For years, she was on the faculty of the OU Health Sciences Center before enrolling in the OSU Graduate School to complete the doctorate. While completing her doctorate she was a visiting professor at OSU teaching two courses.
Active in the American Dietetic Association, she is one of 13 elected and appointed members of the ADA Commission on Accreditation. While in Missouri she was both president and delegate of the Missouri Dietetic Association and served on some ADA house of delegate committees. She was president of the Oklahoma City Soroptimist Club, a club that provides community service on a volunteer basis.
Florene is survived by her beloved family, Devin Chancey and wife Beverly; nephew Clifford Chancey; niece Gail Chancey; and known to her as grandchildren, Mindy Johnson and husband Mark, Misty Reece and husband Anthony and also her boys Jase and Lane Johnson and many other cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2021 at the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Hunnicutt officiating. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Weleetka under the direction of the Rogers Funeral Home.
