The April Henryetta school board meeting covered a wide gamut of projects and subjects starting with the addition of a new member. David Molet took the oath of office to start off the evening. He was elected earlier this month.
swearBoard members named Roger Williams as the new elementary principal following a short executive session. See the story HERE.
May 18 was set as the date to sell $1,025,000 in bonds that are part of the transportation bond issue used to purchase new buses.
Along that same vein, the board authorized superintendent Dwayne Noble to sell the old buses and one suburban vehicle at a fair market value. He told the board one person has contacted him about purchasing all of the surplus vehicles. “This streamlines the process from sending out bids. There’s not a big market for a 1993 school bus,” Noble said.
The board accepted resignations from Glendale Threatt, Sherrie Flud, Sherry Miller, Christle Wells and Lori Mann.
The pandemic is starting to ease its grip on school activities.
Elementary principal Jayme Matlock said no staff members have tested positive for the virus and only six students were quarantined in March. “I’m proud of the decline,” she said. She told the board grade school students braved the chill Saturday to participate in a track meet that was a fundraiser for the high school track team. “We want to make it an annual event. There were 80 kids participate.”
The COVID issue means kindergarten graduation on May 6 will be held in a series of events. “We will stagger the inividiual classes to give parents the chance to leave and others to come in.” That same plan will be in placer the May 3 fifth grade promotion ceremony. Two of the four classes will be highlighted in separate ceremonies.
Athletic director Justin Been said there has not been a single athlete in the middle or high school miss out on games due to quarantine restrictions. He pointed out for many students they were only able to have three years of sports due to the spring season being cancelled last year.
He said the springs sports program is showing several successes with the high school softball girls holding down third place in the state, the tennis teams winning several tough tournaments, track team members accumulating medals and girls golf winning three out of five matches.
In his role as head of the drama department, Been announced the arrival of a new sound board at the auditorium. Purchased through the Henryetta Education Foundation, the new equipment is going to be in place in time for students to perform the musical, “Oklahoma.” That musical will be a series of performances in May.
Henryetta’s gymnasium has new air conditioning installed in the past few weeks. The ducts are of a cloth type that feature the Knight logo. They were seen by the public this past weekend when a statewide tumbling event was held. new ac
Maintenance director Harold Fox said a problem with sewage backups has been eliminated. He showed board members a photo that revealed a fibre optic line was drilled through the sewer line at the stem building. AT&T has been contacted and the school is working to get that company to reimburse the several thousands of dollars spent by the school for plumbers to clear the line.
Krisy Stidman asked the board to allow steel food boxes to be placed around the school. She said the four metal boxes would be placed at the high school, middle and elementary schools and another location on the school grounds. They would be placed in front of security cameras to prevent vandalism. Hopefully those would be ready by the start of the next school year.
A similar food box had been in place at the First Baptist church but it had to be removed due to a new church sign.
