Henryetta school board members were serenaded at the start of their first meeting in 2024 Monday.
Members of the Henryetta Advanced Honor Choir were on hand to help board members celebrate the School Board Appreciation Month.
That entertainment was followed by superintendent Dwayne Noble acknowledging the board.
In personnel action, the board accepted the resignation of Scott Wilde. He has served as middle school math teacher.
A very short executive session resulted in Aundrea Hamric Lee being hired to head up the high school softball team for the coming year. Lee is a 2015 HHS graduate and was first hired at the school to teach kindergarten in December 2021. She moved to the middle school the following year and has coached the HMS softball team.
The annual high school basketball tournament was said to have been a success. Athletic director Bryan Leader said there were good crowds all week and thanked all the volunteers who supplied food for the hospitality room.
High school principal and basketball coach Bunyan Johnson pointed out the HHS boys placed third in the tournament with a win over Beggs.
HMS principal Jayme Matlock reported to the board the academic team has advanced to second round competition at Morris.
The school board will be receiving a recommendation about naming the newly-constructed golf facility at their next meeting.
The committee will be meeting Wednesday to discuss the new name and submit a report to the board.
With extremely cold winter weather anticipated for the weekend and part of next week, Noble said plans call for students to stay at home and conduct their studies online,
“We want to make sure the kids are safe,” he pointed out. Temperatures are forecast to be in single and minus digits and officials are concerned about students waiting at bus stops.
