That puts his name among the ranks of other teachers across the United States with a national winner to be announced next month.
According to Henryetta FVW post service officer Tricia Bear, Been and Henryetta high school could receive $5,000 each if he is the national winner. That prize will include a trip to the Washington, D.C. VFW.
“Justin promotes the American Spirit in the H-Town Theatre, in the community, and through his devotion to the support of veterans and to the military values,” Bear said. She cited instances where Been has written and sung songs as well as screen play skits about veterans. “He's an outstanding singer and every H-town theatre show he directs is an exceptionally talented production. He's received letters of appreciation from the community for his support of veterans. He's even helped in making football uniforms designed in camouflage to honor veterans. His players put flags on veterans graves on memorial day.”
When told about the state selection, Been said he was, “honestly blown away. What an honor. He said he was grateful and blessed to have been involved in many events over the years that have hopefully honored and recognized our "TRUE HEROES" who deserve the greatest praise, appreciation, and recognition for their service to our country and its people. “It almost feels wrong to get an award for just doing what I feel we should all do in showing our Veterans much love, respect, and appreciation.”
