A half century of helping children is going to be celebrated May 21 at the Henryetta Head Start.

At 11 a.m., the Henryetta Head Start building will be holding an open house for all former students and their parents as well as present students.
"We just want to see everyone come back and share their stories and get acquainted with our current staff and operation," said Henryetta Head Start director Ada Jones.

The nation-wide program began in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty effort from then-president Lyndon Johnson.
In Henryetta, Head Start began in the mid-1970s. It is currently housed in a modern building at 100 West Clegern. The current site is the location of the old Roosevelt elementary school.
There are 42 children from birth to five years old that receive an early education as well as develop social skills that stay with them throughout their lives.
