Oklahoma Department of Transportation workers were trying to grind away several layers of asphalt in an attempt to aleviate water standing on Main Street. The area between Ninth and Tenth streets sank by a couple of feet some 30 years ago apparently after an old coal mine tunnel collapsed. Since then, water has pooled in the low spot resulting in a danger for eastbound motorists.
The map below shows a general idea of where subsurface coal mines were operating in and around Henryetta in the early 1900s. One of those areas is in the southwest part of town that has mine tunnels running throughout a large part of the residential area.
