Henryetta high school junior Maddie Gouge is now royalty.
The daughter of Geebon and Jenna Gouge, was crowned Junior Miss Muscogee Creek Nation this past weekend.
She was among four contestants viewing for the title. Another eight young ladies were competing for the Miss MCN honor. The pageant was held at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee.
Gouge received $1,500 along with a beaded crown, traveling silver crown, banners, shawl and other prizes.
The new Miss MCN, Shannon Barnett, received $2,500 in cash and a $2,500 scholarship along with other prizes.
Gouge is the granddaughter of the late Thompson and Lutie Gouge, Karen and Joe Robertson and Johnny and Mary Boyce.
Barnett, a broken Arrow resident, is the daughter of Kay and Daniel Barnett. She is the granddaughter of Dicey and Ed Barnett, and Margaret and the late Artusse Fields. Barnett attends the College of the Muscogee Nation in Okmulgee.
The purpose of the pageant is to provide an educational scholarship opportunity to young Muscogee (Creek) women and help develop public speaking skills, self-confidence and cultural knowledge of Muscogee (Creek) history, customs and traditions. This year's pageant theme was “We Are Mvskoke." ‘Mvskoke' is the traditional spelling for ‘Muscogee.'
