Vernon Virgil VanMeter, Sr., a longtime resident of Henryetta, died Sept. 8, 2015 at his home at the age of 86. He was born Aug. 9, 1929 in Hartshorne to John VanMeter, Sr. and Fannie (Helm) VanMeter. He married Joyce Walter Jan. 29, 1952 in Van Buren, Ark.
Vernon was a retired teacher having taught at Henryetta Public Schools and retired as Athletic Coordinator from Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee.
He was a veteran serving with the United States Army. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Gene, and Clifford VanMeter and by a sister, Shirley Joan VanMeter.
He is survived by his wife Joyce of the home; two sons: Vernon VanMeter, Jr. and wife Patty of Henryetta and Stephen VanMeter of Checotah; two granddaughters: Stephanie Tomlinson and husband Sean of Choctaw;
Karie Dombek of McAlester; five great grandchildren: Jeffrey Lee Dombek, Jr. of McAlester, Matthew Ryan Dombek of McAlester, Brendan Tomlinson of Choctaw, Alison Dombek of McAlester and Aidan Tomlinson of Choctaw; sister, Peggy Funk of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law, Janet VanMeter of Henryetta; also by a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., Friday with family present to greet friends from 6. until 8 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at First Church of the Nazarene. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery under direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
